Qur’an
“In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
Praise be to God, The Cherisher and Sustainer of the
Worlds; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment. Thee do we
worship, and Thine aid we seek.
Show us the straight way, the way of those on whom
Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, Those whose (portion) Is not wrath, and who go
not astray.”
“Worship none but God; treat with kindness your parents
and kindred, and orphans and those in need. Speak fair to the people; be
steadfast in prayer; and practise regular charity.”
“To God belong the East and the West: whithersoever you turn, there is
the Presence of God. For God is All-Pervading, All-Knowing.”
“Then do you remember Me; I will remember You.”
“And your God Is one God: There is no god but He, Most
Gracious, Most Merciful.”
“It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards
East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in God and the Last Day, and
the Angels, and the Book, and the Messengers;
to spend of your substance, out of love for Him, for
your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the wayfarer, for those who ask, fnd
for the ransom of slaves;
to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular
charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made;
and to be firm and patient, in pain (or suffering) and
adversity, and throughout all periods of panic.
Such are the people of truth, the God-fearing.”
“God! There is no god but He,
the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him, nor sleep.
His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in
His presence except as He permits? He knows what (appeareth to His creatures
as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His
knowledge except as He will. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the
earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding, and preserving them. For He is the
Most High, The Supreme (in glory).”
“Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands
out clear from Error: whoever rejects Evil and believes in God has grasped the
most trustworthy Hand-hold, which never breaks. And God hears and knows all
things.
God is the Protector of those who have faith: From the
depths of darkness He will lead them forth into light. Of those who reject
faith the patrons are the Evil Ones: from light they will lead them forth into
the depths of darkness. They will be Companions Of the fire, to dwell therein (For
ever).”
“Those who spend their substance in the cause of God,
and follow not up their gifts with reminders of their generosity or with
injury, for them their reward is with their Lord. On them shall be no fear, nor
shall they grieve. Kind words and the covering of faults are better than
charity followed by injury. God is Free of all wants, and He is most
Forbearing.
O ye who believe! Cancel not your charity by reminders
of your generosity or by injury, like those who spend their substance to be
seen of men, but believe neither in God nor in the Last Day. They are in
Parable like a hard, barren rock, on which is a little soil: on it falls heavy
rain, which leaves it (just) a bare stone. They will be able to do nothing with
aught they have earned. And God guideth not those who reject faith.
And the likeness of those who spend their substance,
seeking to please God and to strengthen their souls, is as a garden, high and
fertile: heavy rain falls on it but makes it yield a double increase of
harvest, and if it receives not heavy rain, light moisture suffices it. God
sees well whatever you do.”
“The Apostle believed in what had been revealed to him
from his Lord, as do the men of faith. Each one (of them) believed in God, His
angels, His books, and His apostles. "We make no distinction (they say)
between one and another of His apostles." And they say: "We hear, and
we obey: (We seek) Thy forgiveness, Our Lord, and to Thee is the end of all
journeys."
On no soul doth God place a burden greater than it can
bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that if earns.
(Pray:) "Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our
Lord! Lay not on us a burden like that which You Did lay on those before us; our
Lord! lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out
our sins, and grant us forgiveness, have mercy on us. You are our Protector; help
us against those who stand against Faith."
“God! There is no god but He,—the Living, the
Self-Subsisting, Eternal.
It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in
truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of
Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He
sent down the Criterion (of judgment between right and wrong). Then those who
reject Faith in the Signs of God will suffer the severest penalty, and God is
exalted in Might, Lord of Retribution.
From God, verily nothing is hidden on earth or in the
heavens. He it is who shapes you in the wombs as He pleases. There is no god
but He, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
He it is who has sent down to thee the Book: in it are
verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation
of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity
follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for
its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except God. And those
who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the
whole of it is from our Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men
of understanding.”
“There is no god but He that is the witness of God, His
angels, and those endued with knowledge, standing firm on justice. There is no
god but He, the Exalted in Power, The Wise.
The Religion before God is Islam (submission to His
Will): Nor did the People of the Book dissent therefrom except
through envy of each other, after knowledge had come to them. But if any
deny the Signs of God, God is swift in calling to account.
So if they dispute with thee, say: "I have
submitted my whole self to God and so have those who follow me." And say
to the People of the Book and to those who are unlearned: "Do ye (also)
submit yourselves?" If they do, they are in right guidance, but if they
turn back, your duty is to convey the Message; and in God's sight are (all) His
servants.
As to those who deny the Signs of God, and in defiance
of right, slay the prophets, and slay those who teach just dealing whith
mankind, announce to them a grievous penalty. They are those whose works will
bear no fruit in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to
help.”
“Believers! Devour not Usury, doubled
and multiplied; but fear God; that Ye may (really) prosper.”
“Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord,
and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the
earth, prepared for the righteous.
Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in
adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men; for God loves those who do
good, and those who, having done something to be ashamed of, or wronged their
own souls, earnestly bring God to mind, and ask for forgiveness for their sins,
-and who can forgive sins except God? - and are never obstinate in persisting
knowingly in (the wrong) they have done.
For such the reward is forgiveness from their Lord, and
Gardens with rivers flowing underneath,— an eternal dwelling: How excellent a
recompense for those who work (and strive)!
Many were the Ways of Life that have passed away before
you: travel through the earth, and see what was the end of those who rejected
Truth.
“If God helps you, no one can overcome you: If He
forsakes you, who is there, after that, that can help you? In God, then, let
Believers put their trust.”
“O mankind! Reverence your Guardian-Lord, who created you from a single
Person, created, of like nature, his mate, and from them twain scattered (like
seeds) countless men and women;— Reverence God, through Whom you demand your
mutual (rights), and (reverence) the wombs (that bore you): for God ever
watches over you.
To orphans restore their property (when they reach
their age), nor substitute (your) worthless things for (their) good ones; and
devour not their substance (by mixing it up) with your own. For this is I ndeed
a great sin.
If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly
with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if
you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one,
or (a captive) that your right hands possess. That will be more suitable, to
prevent you trom doing injustice.
And give the women (on marriage) their dower as a free
gift; but if they, of their own good pleasure, remit any part of it to you,
take it and enjoy it with right good cheer.
To those weak of understanding make not over your
property, which God hath made a means of support for you, but feed and clothe
them therewith, and speak to them words of kindness and justice.
Make trial of orphans until they reach the age of
marriage; if then you find sound judgment in them, release their property to
them; but consume it not wastefully, nor in haste against their growing up. If
the guardian is well-off, let him claim no remuneration, but if he is poor, let
him have for himself what is just and reasonable. When you release their
property to them, take witnesses in their presence: but all-sufficient is God
in taking account.
From what is left by parents and those nearest
relateds, there is a share for men and a share for women, whether the property
be small or large,—a determinate share.
But if at the time of division other relatives, or
orphans, or poor, are present, feed them out of the (property), and speak to
them words of kindness and justice.
“Serve God, and join not any partners with Him; and do
good to parents, kinsfolk, orphans, those in need, neighbours who are near,
neighbours who are strangers, the Companion by your side, the way-farer (ye
meet), and what your right hands possess: For God loveth not the arrogant, the
vainglorious;— (nor) those who are niggardly or enjoin niggardliness on others,
or hide the bounties which God hath bestowed on them; for We have prepared, for
those who resist Faith, a Punishment that steeps them in contempt;— Not those
who spend of their substance, to be seen of men, but have no faith in God and
the Last Day: If any take the Evil One for their intimate, what a dreadful
intimate he is!
And what burden were it on them if they had faith in
God and in the Last Day, and they spent out of what God hath given them for
sustenance? For God hath full knowledge of them.
God is never unjust in the least degree: If there is
any good (done), He doubles it, and gives from His own Presence a great
reward.”
“O People of the Book! Commit no excesses in your
religion: nor say of God aught but the truth.
Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) an
apostle of God, and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit
proceeding from Him: so believe in God and His apostles. Say not
"Trinity": desist: It will be better for you: For God is One God:
Glory be to Him: (Far Exalted is He) above having a son, to Him belong all
things in the heavens and on earth. And enough is God as a Disposer of affairs.
Christ disdaineth not to serve and worship God, nor do
the angels, those nearest (to God): Those who disdain His worship and are
arrogant,— He will gather them all together unto Himself to (answer).
But to those who believe and do deeds of righteousness,
He will give their (due) rewards,—and more, out of His bounty: but those who
are disdainful and arrogant, He will punish with a grievous penalty; nor will
they find, besides God, any to protect or help them.
O mankind! Verily there hath come to you a convincing
proof from your Lord: For We have sent unto you a light (that is) manifest.
Then those who believe in God, and hold fast to
Him,—soon will He admit them to Mercy and Grace from Himself, and guide them to
Himself by a straight Way.
“It was We who revealed the Law
(to Moses): therein was guidance and light.' By its standard have been judged
the Jews, by the Prophets who bowed (as in Islam) to God's Will, by the Rabbis
and the Doctors of Law: For to them was entrusted the protection of God's Book,
and they were witnesses thereto: Therefore fear not men, but fear Me, and sell
not My Signs for a miserable price. If any do fail to judge by (the light of)
what God has revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.”
“And in their footsteps We sent
Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come
before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light, and
confirmation of the Law that had come before him: A guidance and an admonition
to those who fear God.
Let the People of the Gospel judge by what God has
revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what God hath
revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.
To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the
scripture that came before it, and guarding it's in safety: so judge between
them by what God hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging
from the Truth that has come to thee. To each among you have We prescribed a
Law and an Open Way. If God had so willed, He would have made you a single
People, but (His Plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as
in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to God; it is He that will
show you the truth of the matters in which you dispute; and this (He commands):
Judge thou between them by what God hath revealed, and follow not their vain
desires, but beware of them lest they beguile thee from any of that (teaching)
which God hath sent down to thee. And if they turn away, be assured that for
some of their crimes it is God's purpose to punish them. And truly most men are
rebellious.
Do they then seek after a judgment of (the Days of)
Ignorance? But who, for a people whose faith is assured, can give better
judgment than God?”
“Say:"I tell you not that with me are the
Treasures of God, nor do I know what is hidden, nor do I tell you I am an
angel. I but follow what is revealed to me."
“It is We Who created you and gave you shape; then We
bade the angels bow down to Adam, and they bowed down; not so Iblīs; he refused
to be of those who bow down.
(God) said: "What prevented you from bowing down
when I commanded you?" He said: "I am better than he: You did create
me from fire, and him from clay."
(God) said: "Get thee down from this: it is not
for thee to be arrogant here: get out, for you are of the meanest (of
creatures)."
He said: "Give me respite till the day they are
raised up."
(God) said: "Be thou among those who have
respite."
He said: "Because tyou have thrown me out of the
Way, lo! I will lie in wait for them on Your Straight Way: "Then will I
assault them from before them and behind them, from their right and their left:
Nor will You find, in most of them, gratitude (for Your mercies).
(God) said: "Get out from this, disgraced and
expelled. If any of them follow thee,— Hell will I fill with you all.
"O Adam! dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden,
and enjoy (its good things) as you wish: but approach not this tree, or you run
into harm and transgression."
Then began Satan to whisper suggestions to them,
bringing openly before their minds all their shame tat was hidden from them
(before): he said: "Your Lord only forbade you this tree, lest you should
become angels or such beings as live for ever." And he swore to them both,
that he was their sincere adviser.
So by deceit he brought about their fall: when they
tasted of the tree, their shame became manifest to them, and they began to sew
together the leaves of the Garden over their bodies. And their Lord called to
them: "Did I not forbid you that tree, and tell you that Satan was an
avowed enemy to you?"
They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged our own
souls: If Thou forgive us not and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall
certainly be lost."
(God) said: "Get you down, with enmity between
yourselves. On earth will be your dwelling-place and your means of livelihood,—
for a time."
He said: "Therein shall you live, and therein
shall you die; but from it shall you be taken out (at last)."
“Say: The things that my Lord has indeed forbidden
are: Shameful deeds, whether open or secret; sins and trespasses against truth
or reason; assigning of partners to God, for which He has given no authority; and
saying things about God of which you have no knowledge.”
"For We
had certainly sent unto them a Book, based on knowledge, which We explained in
detail,—a guide and a mercy to all who believe.”
"And if there is a party among you who believes in
the Message with which I have been sent, and a party which does not believe, hold
yourselves in patience until God does decide between us: for He is the best to
decide."
“Of those We have created are people who direct (others)
with truth. And dispense justice therewith.”
“And who is more faithful to his Covenant than God? Then
rejoice in the bargain which ye have concluded: That is the achievement
supreme.”
Say: "In the Bounty of God. And in His Mercy, — in
that Let them rejoice."
“Say: "He is my Lord! There is no god but He! On
Him is my trust, and to Him do I turn!"”
Relate in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she
withdrew from her family to a place in the East. She placed a screen (to screen
herself) from them; then We sent to her Our angel, and he appeared before her
as a man in all respects.
She said: "I seek refuge from thee to (God) Most
Gracious: (come not near) if you do fear God."
He said: "Nay, I am only a messenger from your
Lord, (to announce) to you the gift of a holy son."
She said: "How shall I have a son, seeing that no
man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?"
He said: "So (it will be): Thy Lord saith,
"That is easy for Me: and (We Wish) to appoint him as a Sign unto men and
a Mercy from Us": It is a matter (so) decreed."
So she conceived him, and she retired with him to a
remote place. And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a
palm-tree: She cried (in her anguish): "Ah! would that I had died before
this! would that I had been a thing forgotten and out of sight!"
But (a voice) cried to her from beneath the
(palm-tree): "Grieve not! For thy Lord has provided a rivulet beneath
thee; "And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree: It will let
fall fresh ripe dates upon you. "So eat and drink and cool (your) eye. And
if you do see any man, say, 'I have vowed a fast to
(God) Most Gracious, and this day will I enter into no talk with any human
being.'"
At length she brought the (babe) to her people, carrying
him (in her arms). They said: "O Mary! Truly an amazing thing have you
brought! "O sister of Aaron! Your father was not a man of evil, nor your mother
a woman unchaste!"
But she pointed to the babe. They said: "How can
we talk to one who is a child in the cradle?"
He said: "I am indeed a servant of God: He has
given me revelation and made me a prophet; "And He has made me blessed
wheresoever I be, and has enjoined on me prayer and Charity as long as I live;
"(He) has made me kind to my mother, and not overbearing or miserable;
"So Peace is on me the day I was born, the day that I die, and the day
that I shall be raised up to life (again)"!
“God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The
parable of His Light is as if there were a Niche and within it a Lamp: The Lamp
enclosed in Glass: The glass as it were a brilliant star: Lit from a blessed
Tree, an Olive, neither of the East nor of the West, whose Oil is well-nigh
luminous, though fire scarce touched it: Light upon Light!
God doth guide whom He will to His Light: God doth set forth Parables for men: and God doth know all things.
God doth guide whom He will to His Light: God doth set forth Parables for men: and God doth know all things.
(Lit is such a Light) in houses, which God has
permitted to be raised to honour; for the celebration, in them, of His name: In
them is He glorified in the mornings and in the evenings, (again and again), by
men whom neither traffic nor merchandise can divert from the Remembrance of
God, nor from regular Prayer, nor from the practice of regular Charity: Their
(only) fear is for the Day when hearts and eyes will be transformed (in a world
wholly new),— that God may reward them according to the best of their deeds,
and add even more for them out of His Grace: For God does provide for those
whom He will, without measure.
But the Unbelievers,—
their deeds are like a mirage in sandy deserts, which the man parched
with thirst mistakes for water; until when he comes up to it, He finds it to be
nothing: but he finds God (ever) with him, and God will pay him his account:
And God is swift in taking account.
Or (the Unbelievers’ state) is like the depths of
darkness in a vast deep ocean, Overwhelmed with billow topped by billow, topped
by (dark) clouds: Depths of darkness, one above another: if a man stretches out
his hand, he can hardly see it! For any to whom God gives not light, there is
no light!
Seest thou not that it is God whose praises all beings
in the heavens and on earth do celebrate, and the birds (of the air) with wings
outspread? Each one knows its own (mode of) prayer and praise. And God knows
well all that they do.
Yes, to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and
the earth; and to God is the final goal (of all).”
“All that is on earth will perish: But will abide (for
ever) the Face of thy Lord.”
“Whatever is in the heavens and on earth, — let it
declare the Praises and Glory of God: For He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the
earth: It is He Who gives Life and Death; and He Has Power over all things.
He is the First and the Last, the Evident and the
Immanent: And He has full knowledge of all things.
He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six
Days, and is moreover firmly established on the Throne (of authority). He knows
what enters within the earth and what comes forth out of it, what comes down from
heaven and what mounts up to it. And He is with you wheresoever you may be. And
God sees well all that you do.
To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the
earth: And all affairs are referred back to God.
He merges Night into Day, and He merges Day into
Night; and He has full knowledge of the secrets of (all) hearts.”
“Believe in God and His
Apostle, and spend (in charity) out of the (substance) whereof He has made you
heirs. For, those of you who believe and spend (in charity),—for them is a
great Reward.
What cause have you why ye should not believe in
God?—And the Apostle Invites you to believe in your Lord, and has indeed taken
your Covenant, if you are men of faith.
He is the One Who sends to His Servant manifest Signs,
that He may lead you from the depths of Darkness into the Light and Verily, God
is to you Most kind and Merciful.
And what cause have you why you should not spend in
the cause of God?— For to God belongs the heritage of the heavens and the
earth. Not equal among you are those who spent (freely) and fought, before the
Victory, (with those who did so later). Those are higher in rank than those who
spent (freely) and fought afterwards. But to all has God promised a goodly
(reward). And God is well acquainted with all that you do.”
“By the (Winds) Sent Forth one after another (to man's
profit); which then blow violently in tempestuous Gusts, and scatter (things) far
and wide; then separate them, one from another, then spread abroad a Message, whether
of Justification or of Warning;— Assuredly, what ye are promised must come to
pass.
Then when the stars become dim; when the heaven is
cleft asunder; when the mountains are scattered (to the winds) as dust; and when
the apostles are (all) appointed a time (to collect);— for what Day are these (portents)
deferred? For the Day of Sorting out. And what will explain to thee what is the
Day of Sorting out?
Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth! Did We
not destroy the men of old (for their evil)? So shall We make later (generations)
follow them. Thus do We deal with men of sin.
Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth! Have We
not created you from a fluid (held) despicable?— The which We placed in a place
of rest, firmly fixed, for a period (of gestation), determined (according to
need)?
For We do determine (according to need); for We are
the Best to determine (things).
Ah woe, that Day! To the Rejecters of Truth! Have We
not made the earth (as a place) to draw together the living and the dead, and
made therein mountains standing firm, lofty (in stature); and provided for you
water sweet (and wholesome)?
Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth! (It will
be said:) "Depart you to that which you used to reject as false!
"Depart you to a Shadow (of smoke ascending) in three
columns, "(which yields) no shade of coolness, and is of no use against the
fierce Blaze. "Indeed it throws about Sparks (huge) as Forts, "as if
there were (a string of) yellow camels (marching swiftly).
Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth! That will
be a Day when they shall not be able to speak, nor will it be open to them to
put forth pleas.
Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth! That will
be a Day of Sorting out! We shall gather you together and those before (you)! Now,
if ye have a trick (or plot), use it against Me!
Ah woe, that Day, to the Rejecters of Truth!”
